Vests are a convenient and functional way to increase the load during a cardio-vascular exercise like running. Additional weight means more calories burned because your body has to work harder to support the extra weight. In the same way, Power Vests are the best way to load plyometrics and agility drills because they both increase your workload and force you to work harder during deceleration.

The Power Vest is the best way to load a body-weight exercise because the weight is more proximal and is firmly secured around the torso. During a chin-up, for example, your path through the movement is ‘truer’ than it is with a weight hanging between your legs. This will provide a better carry-over to a bodyweight chin because the movement pattern remains identical.

Vests are also very useful for exercises where you privilege one body part over another. Take the overhead squat, for example. The total load is not limited by your leg strength, but by the total load you are able to hold over your head. By strapping on a Power Vest, you can increase the load being driven by your legs while not having to increase the weight you have to stabilize overhead. Farmer’s Walks are another example where the load is limited by grip strength, rather than the capacity of your legs to shift it.

While it sounds like a great, versatile piece of equipment, a good quality vest is very difficult to find. Weighted vests tend to fail in two respects; they either don’t hold their shape very well, or they don’t stick to yours. To preserve your Vest’s lifespan, please ensure this is not rubbed across abrasive surfaces like gravel or concrete, such as may occur when performing sit ups and other ground-based exercises.
